Abstract:
When we look at the history of religion, we are fascinated by it, in the same way we are fascinated by, say the history of art. But otherwise, religion has nothing useful to teach us about the world.
More than 40% of Americans think the world is less than 10,000 years old, which is a shocking figure showing deep profound ignorance.
Dawkins talks a bit about how he came to become an atheist and that Darwin made it possible for him to be an intellectually fulfilled atheist. Dawkins makes an excellent point that before Darwin it was actually quite difficult to be an atheist because we didn’t yet have an explanation for why living things look so well designed.
He then suggests that it is quite wrong to believe that science reduces humanity, that it somehow gives you a bleak, cold, empty view of the universe and of life; quite the contrary, religion is enriching and fulfilling.
The video ends with two questions for God upon meeting him in the unlikely event he were to exist.
